Olmsted County Commissioner District 3

County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. Learn more about the day in the life of a county commissioner in this video from the Association of Minnesota Counties.A candidate forum for this race is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G3b4In74Lw&list=PL8uLxKF-4-jKDjR2AUzLym9Cdc5c8ja9v&index=2&pp=iAQB. If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (750 characters)

How would you ensure election laws do not create barriers to Minnesotans’ freedom to vote while also ensuring safe and secure elections? (500 characters)

What do you see as the biggest challenges to mental health and social services in your county, and how would you address them? (500 characters)

Affordable housing: Attracting and retaining a diverse workforce requires readily available housing options across the income spectrum. County efforts need to include affordable housing for our growing older adult population, first-time homeowners, and renters.

Climate change: County policies should address climate change impacts and safeguard our most at-risk communities. We can build a sustainable, resilient county that prospers for generations to come.

Adapting to Longer Lifespans: The 65+ population is our fastest-growing demographic. We need to ensure county policies, planning, services, and resource allocation adapt to longer lifespan. We can create a future where everyone thrives at every stage of life.
Minnesota election laws support broad voter participation, same-day registration/voting, aids for visual/hearing-impaired, drive-up options ideal for mobility impaired/older adults, early/absentee voting in-person/via mail. Also, regulations set out by the Secretary of State for the entire election process on which counties execute. As a commissioner with oversight responsibilities for county government, I will work with our administration to ensure fair, open, safe, and secure election process.
Since dismantling the state hospital system, Minnesota mental health policy and funding has not served us well. We are fortunate to have the SE Regional Crisis Center, Mobile Services and Zumbro Valley Health Center, but these services cannot meet the current need and growing demand for mental health services and crisis care. This statewide challenge requires a statewide response. The county should lead in building service partnerships and legislative coalition required to meet the challenge.

Housing. This is a critical need for seniors, low-income families, and working families. Businesses, industries, and economic development depend on adequate housing for a growing workforce. I will collaborate with our city, the housing authority, and non-profit partners to plan and implement mixed income housing projects and preserve naturally occurring low-income housing.
Minnesota already has the strongest laws that protect the right to vote. Additionally, Minnesota allows for same day registering to vote, early voting, voting by mail, and in-person voting. All of these assure the right to vote. Additionally, I insist that election officials and election judges receive adequate training so that the laws protecting voter rights are followed.
The lack of mental health providers and inadequate availability of psychiatrists have created gaps in mental health services. To alleviate these gaps, I support the addition of social workers who specialize in mental health to work with youth and adults, training of county staff and community volunteers to be able to provide mental health first aid, and develop internet self-help resources. Additionally, I support expanding the scope of work for nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacist.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
