Crow Wing County Commissioner District 5

County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. Learn more about the day in the life of a county commissioner in this video from the Association of Minnesota Counties.A candidate forum for this race is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj_vET40Sx0. 1. Transparency. The residents of Crow Wing County should have easy and full access to the actions and voting records of our Commissioners any time of the day. All committee meetings and events need to be recorded and uploaded for viewing. 2. Fiscal responsibility. We need to take a hard look at our budget going forward. Times are getting tough. Living is getting more expensive. We need to do a line by line assessment of our budget and slow down our spending. 3. Accountability/Communication. When elected, I will be open and available to our citizens all year, every year, not just during election years. Residents deserve a voice on our county board and I will do that. Government serves the citizens, not the other way around.
I would work with the other commissioners to find ways to ensure voters have confidence in the election system in Crow Wing County first. Ensuring our current voting system is secure is paramount. If we can't say with 100% certainty that electronic voting is secure, I would support returning to paper ballot voting and counting. I would also work to ensure all in person and absentee ballots are collected and counted properly. There is no American right more important than the right to vote.
Mental health is becoming a larger issue seemingly daily. Because of that we are seeing our social services growing at the same rate. We need to put the focus on finding a way to improve the situation instead of just throwing money at it. Several possible solutions have been discussed and some have been attempted. I would learn what is working and scrap what isn't. I would look at other agencies to see where there has been success, determine if it would fit our needs and apply those changes.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
