Minnesota State House District 17B

The lower chamber of the Minnesota legislature has two representatives per senate district for a total of 134. Representatives are elected every two years. They write and vote on legislation to create, repeal, or change state laws affecting many issues, like health care, the environment, and the economy. They also vote on state taxes and the state spending. What your state legislature does affects many facets of your life—the taxes you pay, the highways on which you drive, public schools, the state-supported colleges and universities you or your children might attend, the state parks that provide recreation for you and your family, social programs, and funding for the judicial system.A candidate forum for this race is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qlKsrhS5XQ. 1. Assure that we maintain strong healthcare programs in Minnesota for reproductive rights, eldercare, and mental health for all ages. I will support, sponsor / co-sponsor legislation that assures privacy and confidentiality in matters of healthcare. 2. Sustain family farms in our state so that the legacy of good land stewardship and dignified animal husbandry are kept in practice. As a top producer of agricultural goods, we must seek ways to help family farms prosper. 3. Provide resources and necessary funds to restore strong public schools at all levels. In Greater Minnesota, enrollment is declining due in part to economic conditions and school districts still experience a high turnover rate among paraprofessionals, teachers, and staff.
I believe that one way to help our economy is to re-evaluate how Local Government Aid is allocated to small towns and rural cities. For example, when sales tax revenue is collected by rural residents who purchase goods and services in large cities, is it possible to return some of those funds back to the communities where they live?
I would support, sponsor / co-sponsor legislation that works to improve disparities with racial and/or ethnic populations. I believe that a more diverse community only makes us richer.
I am concerned about climate change and its effects on our environment. I would support programs to increase availability of alternative energy resources, such as improving availability of EV charging stations, encouraging incentives for products such as robotic (non-combustion) equipment, and plant more trees, flowers, and native plants.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
