Anoka City Mayor

The role of city mayor can vary from city to city. However, the mayor is usually the head of the city and may represent the city in front of other government bodies. A mayor also usually has a role in proposing a city budget that is approved by the city council. The budget influences the services the city provides to its residents. Mayors sometimes are voting members of city council, and in some cities the mayor is in charge of city council meetings. Anoka needs new leadership that is transparent in how our public processes work. Anoka is supposed to be a government of, for, and by the people. Just recently, my opponent made a hostile accusation on camera at a city meeting accusing a city council member of inviting the Anoka County Attorney to that public meeting. My opponent referred to it as a non-publicized meeting when in fact it was deemed a public meeting where anyone is invited. I am the best candidate for this position because I am level headed & think we all make better decisions in the process of discussing various differing opinions.I have been humbled and honored to have been asked by a number of Anoka’s community and business leaders to step up and lead Anoka as mayor!
Safety is paramount and what attracts people to Anoka. Without a safe community we see signs of deterioration of our economic security which prevents businesses from thriving. Initiate Grocer or Marketplace on Main street by removing the city ordinance that prevents this occurrence. Your tax dollars will be used wisely. Cost over runs must stop.
People lack trust in Anoka government due to lack of transparency. I will continue to build bridges of trust and inclusion in a respectful process. Anoka can utilize software that interacts people with meet up events for each item of public interest. In 2025, I will re-evaluate our Code of Conduct with the new administration. I am retired and have time to devote to Anoka.
“Meet The Mayor Weekly” will be a public connect forum. Anoka people want more input on: Waste Management services, Jail expansion, roadway, riverway and railway transit changes and tax increases. We will keep these postings of meetings that engage discussion notably at city hall and online forums. I spend time building bridges and solving problems in the community. I serve on the: Economic Development Committee, and champion finding a grocer, parking concerns, neighborhood appearance and more.
Safety is paramount and what attracts people to Anoka. Without a safe community we see signs of deterioration of our economic security which prevents businesses and all from thriving. Our August Night to Unite helps connect people to our public safety officers. Anoka has been the first to have a School Resources Officer. Safety is best in education of prevention. We must diligently address citizen awareness to prevent threats and scams.

I have been on the council for 5 years, am a past park board member, but more importantly, I am just a citizen that has been engaged and paying attention to Anoka for a long time. Most citizens don’t have the time to get into the weeds of city government but they want someone they know, they can trust to explain issues to them and advocate on their behalf.

My motivation to run for Mayor is the same as when I ran for city council, I think the viewpoints of the council should represent the citizens that they serve and should engage with the community to try to understand what they want out of their city. I have demonstrated I work hard to listen, respond and engage with citizens and provide an alternative viewpoint to many issues.
Anoka has seen a renaissance over the past decade and I want to keep it going. Helping our downtown remain vibrant, keeping our neighborhoods strong and safe, maintaining infrastructure from pipes to parks, preserving our unique natural and historic assets, and using taxpayer resources wisely, Anoka can be the vibrant and charming city that it has been for generations. I am running to advocate for those issues but also the day to day ones that impact individuals where the city can help out.
This has been an issue in Anoka and in my opinion continues to be with some elected and appointed officials that are very involved in the Anoka business community. We have a rather weak code of ethics that all elected and appointed officials in Anoka have been bound by but even that forces us to disclose potential conflicts. Citizens need to trust their leaders and to know that those leaders need to be transparent and we should make this code more robust with clear action steps for violations.
I spend a lot of time listening and reaching out to folks however they like to communicate and to make that connection so they have someone they can come to when they have an issue. Whether it is at an event in the park, via phone or email, or through social media posts, I put myself out in ways people feel most comfortable reaching out. I do my best to bring a perspective that is often missed. I am there for people and promise to keep being there if elected Mayor.
Having a safe and welcoming city is important to me. I will continue to support our police and fire folks by providing them the resources and training they need. They are out there proactively breaking down barriers in the community while enforcing the rule of law. Both are important to keeping us safe. But public safety is more than that. It is adequate street lighting, well maintained roads, and connecting neighbors with each other. The more we watch out for each other the safer we all are.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
