Grant City Council Member {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

As local legislators who sometimes have executive power, council members can propose ordinances, set administrative policy, and authorize the budget proposed by the mayor. They oversee all city activities, including city services, programs, licensing, and public safety. Mayoral appointments to city government typically require council approval. I am the best candidate because I have a diverse background of government service, and small business that requires critical thinking and working as a team. I don’t get frustrated or upset when people don’t agree with me and like to work to find the best solution for a given problem, accepting that my answer may not always be the best. In this day and age it is often my way or nothing, but that approach isn’t what’s needed to ensure that the residents' needs come first. I want to work with our residents to make sure their lives are improved.
Preserve our Rural Landscape, work to uphold our current zoning ordinances, ensuring that Grant retains its special charm. This approach will help keep taxes low and provide the needs for our community. Work with staff to create a roadmap for the roads to bring about better decision making for our roads and allowing for better informed residents. Ensure Public Safety, work to ensure the safety of our roads and maintain partnerships with neighboring cities for our police and fire needs.
The first thing that will help with community engagement is to create a more welcoming environment at our city council meetings and to ensure clear lines of communication with the council members. We have a large number of people in Grant and making sure they know how to reach the council and staff will ensure that their needs are met.
I want to allow for the recording of our working sessions and public input to allow for greater knowledge throughout the community of the issues other Grant residents are having. Also, pushing for more involvement at the city council meetings and working sessions to have a better informed Grant.

I have always been the type of person to get involved in my community.

I am not afraid of hard work. I am reliable and resourceful. As an attorney practicing civil litigation, I am adept at navigating through difficult situations while remaining professional and respectful.

I have extensive experience working collaboratively with others as I served as Rutherford Elementary PTA president for 2 years, am a current Den Leader for our local Cub Scouts Pack, and a member on a Habitat for Humanity committee. I am well-versed in working with others and understand the importance of utilizing and championing each team member’s strengths so we can achieve a common goal. I love living in Grant and would be honored to serve our community.
I would ensure that Grant remains a rural community. I will protect and preserve Grant as a diverse community of homes, small businesses, and scenic views that define Grant. Grant isn’t a cookie-cutter city, and I want to keep it that way for generations to come.

I would like to connect our community. We could have a community event where residents can come together.

It is also important that we have an open, transparent government that encourages citizen participation and input.
The City Council is here to serve its residents, and I would prioritize listening to our residents and opening a platform for them to be heard. When major decisions are before the Council, I would knock on doors to poll our residents and talk about the issues face to face. I would post on Nextdoor to provide more exposure of matters before Council to our residents. We shouldn’t solely rely on residents coming to a meeting to voice concerns and instead should meet people where they are.
I prioritize open, transparent governance. I want residents to be aware of what decisions are before the Council and would encourage involvement. We should welcome residents to attend City Council meetings and provide input so we can work together. We can update our city website to provide more accessible information on recent decisions and upcoming agenda items. Our newsletter can be more robust to provide more information to Grant. I would also propose re-engaging the planning commission.

I have served one four year term and have the experience of working for the citizens of Grant. When engaging in conversations with fellow residents, it is clear that we all want the same for out city. Keep our current density requirements and preserve our way of life. Many, including myself want to pass down our property to our children so that they may continue to enjoy the peace, beauty, wildlife, livestock and privacy all while maintaining a sense of community with our neighbors. I will work hard to protect our city from outside entities who wish to change it. We do not want to be like other cities. We want to hold onto our rural residential lifestyle for generations to come.
1) Keep Grant what is has been for many generations by sticking to our 10 acre density and keeping out city sewer and water. 2) Open communication with residents and staff. This includes restoring the planning commission and public input. The council works for all residents and should value their feedback. 3) Financial responsibility and accountability is tremendously important. I will work to use your tax dollars wisely without wasteful spending.
I want our community to know that I will listen to what they have to say. I will then take their comments or concerns back to the council. Feedback from residents is essential when it comes to making decisions.
I will be open and honest to those I serve within our community and encourage them to participate. Residents should easily be able to find information on our website pertaining to spending and projects. Restoring our Planning Commission would be a good start for citizen participation and encouraging feedback during public input during council meetings.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
