As a proud District 206 graduate with children in the district, I am motivated to make an impact not only for my own children but for all students and am committed to continuing our district’s tradition of excellence! As the current chair of the Alexandria School Board, I take great pride in advocating for the needs of all students and find it important to listen to, respect, and value diverse perspectives. I am a team player who embraces collaboration and consensus building. I value the use of data-driven decision making. I take seriously the responsibilities of the care of the district, the efficient use of resources entrusted to us by our taxpayers, as well as careful, strategic thought to the long-term direction of the district.
If elected, my top three priorities would be ensuring all students have access to high quality education, prioritizing the student experience, and the responsible alignment of resources with our mission and vision. All three of these keep us accountable to our community and will be important to remaining competitive in our current environment of increased school choice options and declining birth rates.
When forced to cut the budget, my strategy has always been to keep the cuts out of the classroom as much as possible and instead look at where else in the district efficiencies, creativity or innovation can help us run leaner.
It is important that all students have access to a quality education that not only promotes academic mastery but also encourages them to find their passion, develop to their full potential and be successful in life. As a school board member, I advocate for and support the educational practices of our dedicated staff who identify and address the needs of those students experiencing any number of disparities or challenges.
I value strong relationships with families and teachers as well as other stakeholders and welcome conversation with all to understand the various perspectives of those impacted by our decisions. We set aside time at our meetings to hear from anyone wishing to address the board. I also engage with community members out in the community and am also available by phone and email.
I am a parent of a 7th grader at Discovery Middle School, a 1988 graduate of Jefferson Senior High, and a near lifelong resident of Alexandria. Currently I am also an active member of both the Discovery Middle School Parent Principal Connect and District 206 Superintendent Advisory Councils. My 30 plus years’ experience in the manufacturing sector has afforded me the opportunity to develop an open-minded and evidence-based approach that I utilize to make objective decisions. My opponent is seeking her 4th term this election cycle. I bring a refreshed approach along with strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills that will be a welcomed common-sense voice for parents, teachers, and students alike.
My priority is to become an effective board member. To reach that goal, I need to gain a deeper understanding of our districts condition and its vison. Naturally, the next step is to identify the existing strengths and weaknesses of the district as an entire operating system or entity. Actions and solutions can then propose to address the weaknesses thru using measurable actions found within the districts policies and procedures
The only way to properly handle a reducing spending is by using an evidence based analytic approach. The difficult task of reducing programs due to revenue loss starts with a simple question. What is the academic return on investment of the program? A programs AROI is addressed by understanding the student’s growth in the program compared to how they would grow without it. The school board shall always make these decisions while avoiding adding additional financial burden to the community.
The heart of this question addresses educational equality. School systems must provide equal opportunities for all students. Thru equality, students are treated the same and given the same opportunity to excel
I am not an expert or someone who knows all. Decisions made with input from outside resources such as teachers and families, will always be stronger than those make alone. I am always willing to hear from anyone. Our districts Principle Connect, and Superintendent advisory Council are great tools for parent feedback.
