My experience as a high school science teacher and having performed research in the aerospace industry give me a unique perspective as to the challenges facing our local schools, as well as the outcomes that are necessary to have graduating students obtain advancement in competitive industries.
1. Staff who work with students every day should know that they have a school board that shares their passion for student learning and wants to provide support for their efforts. 2. The community should be able to see the school board as good stewards of the resources that they are entrusted with and know that they will use those limited resources to create the best environment for education. 3. Building on outreach efforts to families with the goal of increasing enrollment and attendance.
Budget cuts are a time where the school board’s relationship with administration is put to the test. Developing trust between supervising staff and the school board is important year round so that when staffing recommendations are made by administration, the school board can provide helpful scrutiny. If cuts are necessary, staff who work directly with students such as teachers, paraprofessionals, and counselors should be as protected from reductions as possible.
On this issue, listening to students, staff, and community without a preconceived agenda is absolutely required. Beyond that, making sure that every student feels engaged and involved in the classroom and in extracurriculars allows personal connections that transcend disparities to form. To facilitate this, the school board can focus on keeping class sizes small, and fees for extracurriculars as low as financially responsible.
No decision at the school board level should be made without input from staff and parents. To some extent, the school board has to trust administrative staff to represent the interests of multiple stakeholders. Working with established employee groups to develop relationships with staff leaders is an important method of gaining input on pending decisions. Most importantly, finding communication methods that families engage with and asking for their input using those methods is essential.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
