Shoreview City Council Member {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

As local legislators who sometimes have executive power, council members can propose ordinances, set administrative policy, and authorize the budget proposed by the mayor. They oversee all city activities, including city services, programs, licensing, and public safety. Mayoral appointments to city government typically require council approval.Voting in local elections is important - learn more here: Why Vote for City Council

Several key leaders in Shoreview asked me to run due to my experience in government and expertise in topics such as energy, climate, water, solid waste, and recycling. I served in the Legislature from 2007 to 2010 and as elected Ramsey Conservation District supervisor from 2013 to 2017. I'm also a graduate of the Shoreview Citizens Academy and was named Shoreview Citizen of the Year in 2021. There are two candidates for two seats.
I would like to continue the tradition of competent leadership in Shoreview by maintaining our high quality and cost-effective programs and services. We must also maintain our status as a safe and welcoming community for everyone. I would like to lead on the issue of climate by identifying and reducing risks to our infrastructure and homes, especially carrying out the city’s new Energy Action Plan (developed with Xcel Energy) that can save us all an estimated $2.3 million by 2030.
Following local government can be frustrating because of convoluted (but necessary) legal requirements. I want to keep residents posted about what is coming down the pike to build support for good ideas and avoid conflict that arises due to misunderstanding of the process. Helping residents, businesses, and our other institutions identify the right time to chime with their ideas would be a priority. As a legislator, I kept a blog about what issues were coming before us, and hope to do the same.
The city must of course comply with the open meetings law. Residents within a certain distance of a building project have to be notified. However, there are times when we have to go beyond the law and reach out to neighborhoods through greater engagement to make sure people know what is going on. I would like to help residents decipher our government lingo to build trust and great collaboration.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
