Dakota County Soil and Water Supervisor District 3

SWCDs are local units of government that manage and direct natural resource management programs. Districts work in both urban and rural settings, with landowners and with other units of government, to carry out actions for the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources. I live in Eagan with my husband and two girls. We enjoy being outside as much as possible year-round. I grew up on a small farm outside of Northfield-in Dakota County's Greenvale Township. For me, the connection to our land and plants remains very real. I love growing Minnesota natives in my yard–especially when I walk and hear happy bees buzzing around. I'm running because I love what this role offers our residents. My day job is marketing. Cross-collaborative work is where I shine. Building partnerships and getting the word out about options in our county is critical to encouraging actions where everyone can join in. My goal is to increase awareness, invite others to join in some aspect of conservation, and collaborate.
My goal is to increase awareness, invite others to join in some aspect of conservation, and collaborate. In order to increase awareness, there could be more collaboration at the city-wide level to get the word out about options within Dakota County Soil & Water. I'm already doing that by being part of the Climate Action Planning Committee. I have built great relationships with folks at the city level and have ideas on how to bring Soil & Water Programs to where folks already are showing up.
The Soil and Water Conservation District "provides technical assistance and financial incentives to Dakota County residents, municipalities and businesses to conserve and manage land and water resources. This is done in partnership with federal, state and local governments as well as local watershed management organizations. " We need to provide awareness, invitation, and collaboration with our neighbors, the city of Eagan in this role. If folks don't know, how can we invite others to join in?
Education is key to providing oversight and inviting others to join in the work. I think everyone can do something small to help conserve our resources, they just need to be invited into the "what" and the "why". It's not fearmongering-it's the idea that we too have an impact in our everyday actions! With awareness around options and choices, we can all pitch in and make a difference, joyfully and freely.

In April, I was honored to be appointed to the Dakota County SWCD Board by its supervisors. I am running to continue my work to protect and improve our natural resources on behalf of my constituents. I am involved in a number of organizations and programs including Dakota County's WHEP and Recycling Ambassador programs, Eagan’s Adopt-a-Drain, and the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA), where I am the president of a local chapter. I’m involved in IWLA’s Salt and Nitrate Watches, and am a certified monitor in their Save our Streams program. In my career I was responsible for project management, giving me insight into the planning and execution of the SWCD initiatives we approve and fund. I graduated from the U of MN with a BS in Bio
My top three priorities are water and soil run-off, ground and surface water quality, and climate change preparedness. These are tightly intertwined: stream, river, lake, wetland, groundwater, and soil runoff - it’s all connected. Climate change, urbanization, and residential and farm practices can greatly impact run-off. Run-off carries nutrients, pesticides, salt, as well as soil and debris that can damage our waters. Also, this means water isn’t sinking in to replenish our groundwater.
The SWCD focuses on assisting private landholders in changing and enhancing their practices to improve our natural resources. Projects include rain gardens, rain barrels, lawns-to-legumes, cover crops, no-till farming, and more. Much of this is done by cost sharing project expenses with the land owners. Projects and practices that might have been cost prohibitive as an individual payor becomes doable. The SWCD also provides expertise in planning and executing these projects.
Climate change introduces many new challenges in protecting our natural resources. This includes much more runoff due to storm burst events versus steady rains, drought events, and plant and crop stress due these extremes. The SWCD provides guidance and funding to mitigate runoff, to provide rain water storage options, and to assist with plant and crop selection for a changing climate. I will provide policy and direction setting, as well as guidance on how our funding dollars should be spent.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.
