I have a love for Granite Falls (GF) that compels me to answer a call to serve. I am an 18 year resident, spending my first decade as editor of the newspaper. There, I not only became acquainted with GF, but did so under long-time Mayor, mentor, boss and friend, Dave Smiglewski. Growing to share Smig's passion for the past, present and future of GF and its neighbors, I produced two historically-based plays honoring GF’s storied past while also serving several local and area boards in an effort to ensure the future. It is in that spirit I founded the Yellowstone Trail (YT) of MN in 2018, was elected nat’l YT Assoc. President in 2023 and accepted the position of GF Chamber Director this summer. I am ready to serve the community I love.
1)Pop. retention/growth 2) Business/downtown 3) Housing/childcare

Why? Grow or die. Pop. loss impacts all community aspects, certainly taxpayer expense. Consider, schools get $9,000/student in per pupil aid. A student lost = $ lost, compounding fast. Loss of property tax base = same result. As it is, business resources drive the community while Main St. offers an avenue for current and potential residents to connect. However, if there are no homes or childcare it is all moot anyway.

By meeting community members where they are at and learning how I can serve their interests. To accomplish this requires an open mind and willingness to seek and understand an individual or group's unique story. In doing so, interestingly, it is only a matter of time before our unique stories nevertheless reflect shared experiences or even reveal existing connections. After all, it's what is inside that counts.
I will serve the interests of our citizens at all times, putting the community first. Acting any way other than above board will put the community in potential peril. Knowing this demands integrity in all actions while welcoming constituents, city staff and fellow servants to hold actions and decisions accountable. In return, I will offer the same. Beyond that, I'll look for ways to improve citizen communication, openness and access. Sunlight is the best disinfectant for government. Period.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
