What can the county attorney do to help respond to the need for gun violence prevention and safe communities? (500 characters)

My top three priorities will be efficiency, engagement, and education. Efficiency: Streamlining prosecution workflows and tackling case backlogs to ensure swift, fair justice for victims and the accused. Engagement: Partnering directly with law enforcement, community groups, and schools to build transparent, proactive safety solutions. Education: Expanding juvenile outreach and diversion programs so students understand the law, choices, and consequences before entering the justice system.
My career spans both sides of the courtroom, giving me a complete view of our justice system. Having represented adults and juveniles across five Minnesota counties as a Public Defender, I understand the critical importance of fairness, constitutional rights, and effective advocacy. Now as an Assistant County Attorney, I handle complex prosecutions daily. This unique balance of defense and prosecutorial experience prepares me to lead with integrity, fairness, and deep legal expertise.
The three biggest challenges facing my office are heavy caseloads, rising violent offenses, and limited diversion opportunities for juveniles. I will address these by modernizing case workflows to process them more efficiently, strengthening collaboration with law enforcement to target violent crime, and expanding community outreach and youth diversion programs. By balancing swift prosecution with proactive prevention, we can resolve cases faster, reduce recidivism, and make Itasca County safer.

Internal conflict requires decisive leadership and unwavering accountability. I will maintain high performance standards while ensuring every prosecutor stays focused on enforcing the law. Public trust is earned not through empty rhetoric, but through principled prosecution and strict adherence to the Rule of Law. By upholding equal justice under the law, backing our law enforcement partners, and leading by personal example, I will hold our office to the highest standards of integrity.
The County Attorney can protect communities by aggressively prosecuting violent criminals. I will fiercely defend the constitutional Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while ensuring our law enforcement partners have the full support needed to take dangerous offenders off our streets. By prioritizing swift, decisive prosecution of gun-related violent crime, we deter bad actors, safeguard innocent lives, and keep Itasca County families safe without infringing on legal gun ownership.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
