What can the county attorney do to help respond to the need for gun violence prevention and safe communities? (500 characters)

My top three priorities are strengthening collaboration, improving communication and public trust, and keeping our community safe. Justice cannot happen in a silo. I will strengthen partnerships with law enforcement, probation, Health and Human Services, defense attorneys, and other justice partners, and community organizations so we can address issues effectively. I will promote open communication with our partners and the public so people feel heard and trust the work of the office. Finally, I will pursue fair, thoughtful justice that balances accountability and public safety with rehabilitation and treatment when appropriate, while ensuring victims are supported, respected, and heard. A safe community for all remains the goal.
I have nearly 20 years of experience in County Attorney’s Offices, beginning as a legal assistant and treatment court coordinator and now serving as an Assistant Winona County Attorney. My experience includes criminal prosecution, juvenile and child protection cases, civil matters, trials, and appeals before Minnesota’s appellate courts. I also served as a managing attorney in the public defender’s office, giving me valuable leadership experience and a broader perspective on our justice system.
One of the biggest challenges is balancing accountability and public safety with rehabilitation and treatment when appropriate. I would address this by working collaboratively with my team to evaluate each case individually, considering the circumstances, public safety, and opportunities for rehabilitation. Victims must also have a meaningful voice in the process, and their input should be heard, respected, and carefully considered.
Racial equity requires ensuring people are treated fairly and consistently throughout the justice system. I would promote open communication and collaboration so concerns about inequity can be raised and addressed. We must hold one another accountable and be open when concerns are brought to us. Recognizing our own biases and reviewing our decisions and practices helps us identify disparities, seek other perspectives when needed, and work toward fair and thoughtful outcomes.
As County Attorney, I would address workplace conflict promptly, listen to those involved, and help find a constructive path forward. Different situations require different approaches, but concerns should not be ignored. Earning public trust requires open communication, accessibility, and transparency. I would encourage people to bring concerns forward, listen respectfully, and provide information when possible while protecting confidentiality when required.
The County Attorney plays an important role in keeping our community safe. This includes enforcing laws involving gun violence, making thoughtful charging decisions, and working with law enforcement and community partners to identify and address safety concerns. Prevention is also important. When appropriate, early intervention, treatment, and other resources can help address underlying issues before they escalate, while accountability remains essential when violence occurs.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
