Becker County Commissioner District 1

County commissioners are the county s key policymakers. They oversee the administration of the county, set county budget, and participate in county long-range planning. County services that they oversee include a wide variety of social service and welfare programs, as well as certain public health programs. Learn more about the day in the life of a county commissioner in this video from the Association of Minnesota Counties. If elected, my top three priorities will be:

1. Fiscal responsibility- Protecting taxpayers by carefully reviewing spending, find cost savings, improve efficiency, and ensuring county dollars provide real value. 2. Strong roads and infrastructure- Supporting responsible investment in roads, bridges, and essential infrastructure while planning for long-term needs and managing costs. 3. Safe, healthy, and thriving communities-Supporting effective public safety, mental health and social services, economic development, and opportunities for Becker County families and businesses.

I will continue listening to residents, making informed decisions, and putting Becker County’s best interests first.
I believe we can protect both election security and voter access. Becker County does a great job conducting secure, accurate, and accessible elections, and I support continuing that work. We should maintain strong safeguards, accurate voter rolls, secure ballot handling, and transparent counting while ensuring eligible voters have reasonable access to registration, early voting, absentee ballots, and polling locations.
Becker County faces challenges with mental health access, substance use, mental health needs in the jail, workforce shortages, and limited placements for youth who need specialized care. As a County Board member, I would strengthen partnerships, support crisis and early-intervention services, advocate for additional youth placement options, and ensure taxpayer dollars are directed toward effective services.
Providing quality county services while controlling costs is difficult, especially with the many state and federal mandates that require counties to provide services without adequate funding. I would advocate for Becker County taxpayers, scrutinize spending, prioritize essential services, seek grants and partnerships, and find efficiencies wherever possible. We must make the most of every taxpayer dollar while holding higher levels of government accountable for the costs they impose on counties.
As a County Commissioner, my role is to ensure Becker County follows state and federal law, protects taxpayers, and keeps our community safe. Immigration enforcement is primarily a federal responsibility, while our Sheriff handles local law enforcement. If Becker County were asked to enter an agreement with federal immigration authorities, I would carefully consider the legal authority, costs, liability, and impact on Becker County before making a decision.
I will continue listening to residents, making informed decisions, and putting Becker County’s best interests first. I plan to remain accessible and listen to the people I represent. For example, with the Toad Mountain issue, I listened to residents living nearby, gathered information, and brought their concerns forward before making decisions. I believe effective leadership means hearing all sides, asking questions, and making informed decisions based on facts and the needs of the County.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and North Dakota crafted the questions sent to the candidates in the Spring of 2024. They reached out to candidates based on contact information in their public candidate filings. Candidates with email addresses were invited and reminded with emails. Candidates with only mailing addresses were sent a letter. Candidates with phone numbers received a phone call as well.

Candidate responses are published as they responded and have not been edited, except when responses were longer than the given character limit. In those cases, the responses are truncated.
