Bridgeton Proposition 3
Simple majority required.Ballot wording: Shall Subsections (A), (B) and (D) of Section 4.02 of the Charter of the City of Bridgeton be amended to (1) remove the requirement that the municipal judge be a resident of the City of Bridgeton; and (2) provide that the municipal judge shall be appointed by the Mayor of the City of Bridgeton with the approval of a majority of the members of the City Council, all as set forth in Section Two of Ordinance No. 25.01?Summary: This proposed city charter amendment would remove the residency requirement for the municipal judge and also allow the mayor to appoint the judge with City Council approval. Now the judge is elected. The new process would begin after the two-year term of the current judge is completed. Voters previously rejected a proposal to have the mayor appoint the judge without council approval. Proponents say by removing the residency requirement, the city could draw from a larger candidate pool of well-qualified individuals.
