Jennings Proposition U

Simple majority required.Ballot wording: Shall the municipality be authorized to impose a local use tax at the same rate as the local sales tax by a vote of the governing body, provided that if any local sales tax shall also be repealed, reduced or raised by the same action? A use tax return shall not be required to be filed by persons whose purchases from out-of-state vendors do not in total exceed two thousand dollars in any calendar year.Summary: This proposed city use tax would be the same amount as the city government s sales tax (currently 1.25%) and it would be applied to purchases that are made from businesses, mostly online or catalog vendors, outside the state and not taxed in the other state. The tax would be collected by the vendor. Proponents say that it would generate a moderate amount of revenue to be used for city services and infrastructure projects. It would also allow local businesses to compete more fairly with out-of-state businesses.
