Herculaneum Proposition U

Simple majority required.Ballot wording: Shall the City of Herculaneum impose a local use tax at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate, provided that if the local sales tax rate is reduced or raised by voter approval, the local use tax rate shall also be reduced or raised by the same action, and also total property tax levy, not including any debt service levy, on properties in the city shall be reduced annually by ten percent (10%) from the maximum authorized levy for that tax year beginning the year following the imposition of the use tax?Summary: The measure would establish a city tax on out-of-state purchases equal to the city government's sales tax rate. If passed, the tax would generate an estimated $30,000 to $60,000 a year to help pay for services such as road maintenance, sidewalks, police and parks. If the use tax passes, the city would reduce by 10% the city's portion of the property tax rate not levied for debt service. Supporters of the measure say imposing the use tax would put local businesses on a more level playing field with out-of-state firms.
