Jefferson County Question 1

Simple majority required.Ballot wording: Shall Jefferson County, Missouri, grant a property tax credit to eligible taxpayers residing in Jefferson County, Missouri, in an amount equal to each eligible taxpayer’s eligible credit amount, to which the real property tax liability on an eligible taxpayer’s homestead shall not be increased above the liability incurred during the initial credit year pursuant to Section 137.1055 of the Missouri Revised Statutes, beginning with property taxes levied for the 2028 tax year?Summary: Beginning in the 2028 tax year, the property tax on a homeowner's primary residence would return to the amount in effect for the 2024 tax year unless there have been voter-approved property tax rate increases or an increase in the home's value due to new construction or renovations. Supporters say the measure would protect homeowners from reassessment-related tax increases and inflation. Critics say public schools, fire districts, the county library and other governments funded by property taxes would lose necessary funds. State law says a homeowner couldn't qualify for both this tax limitation and a separate property tax freeze enacted previously for senior citizens.
