St. Louis Proposition E

Simple majority required.Ballot wording: Shall the earnings tax of 1% imposed by the City of St. Louis, be continued for a period of five (5) years, commencing January 1 immediately following the date of this election?Summary: The measure would continue the 1% earnings tax on salaries of people who live or work within the city limits. If passed, the tax would remain in effect through 2031. The tax generates between $180 million and $240 million a year and makes up 33% to 37% of the city's operating fund. A state law passed in 2010 requires the tax, which was established in 1954, to be renewed every five years. Supporters say the tax pays for essential services including police, streets, health, trash removal and other services. Opponents say the tax hurts businesses' ability to attract and retain employees.
